WHAT CAPITAL PARTNERS SHOULD KNOW
ABOUT THE LIFE SETTLEMENT MARKET
“ Life settlements may offer differentiated return drivers and low sensitivity to traditional market movements—but the asset class is not risk-free. GENERAL INDUSTRY OBSERVATION
Living Benefits Funding originates and evaluates life insurance policies for institutional market participants seeking exposure to the secondary life insurance market.
Performance is primarily influenced by acquisition price, premium requirements, policy durability, carrier strength, and realized longevity. That distinct set of return drivers may make life settlements a useful component of a broader alternatives strategy.

WHAT IS A LIFE SETTLEMENT?
A life settlement is the sale of an existing life insurance policy to a third party for a lump-sum payment. The purchase price is generally greater than the policy’s cash surrender value and less than its death benefit.
After closing, the buyer becomes the policy owner and beneficiary, assumes responsibility for future premiums, and receives the death benefit when the insured dies—subject to the policy terms and transaction documents.

WHY INVESTORS CONSIDER LIFE SETTLEMENTS
Life settlements are specialized, illiquid assets. For investors equipped to evaluate and manage those risks, the market can offer return drivers that differ from traditional fixed income and equity exposures.
Distinct Return Drivers
Realized outcomes depend primarily on policy economics, premium performance, and longevity rather than day-to-day public market pricing.
Actuarial Framework
Life expectancy estimates and scenario analysis provide a structured basis for evaluating timing, premium, and longevity risk.
Differentiated Yield Potential
Disciplined acquisition and premium management may produce differentiated returns, although actual performance can vary materially.
Demographic Supply
An aging insured population and changing coverage needs may continue to expand the pool of policies considered for sale.
Established Regulation
State licensing, disclosures, rescission rights, privacy rules, and transaction oversight form a consumer-protection framework.
